Amrita Health Foods http://amritahealthfoods.com/ Arshad grew up in India and eating fresh fruits and vegetables was a way of life. After coming to the United States, Arshad became a serious cyclist, racing competitively for many years while on a vegetarian diet. But when he took six years off active racing, he gave up vegetarianism and gained some weight. At the same time, Arshad’s son was diagnosed with autism and severe gastrointestinal issues. The diagnosis was devasting to Arshad and his wife, but they were determined to get their son back on track. So in addition to traditional speech, behavior, and occupational therapy, they started their son on an aggressive gluten-free and dairy-free nutrition program. They felt the nutritional changes helped heal his gastrointestinal issues, allowing for better nutrition absorption and making it easier for him to focus on the other therapies. Now, Ayaan is in a regular classroom with peers his own age and is doing well academically.
When Arshad was taking his son through the gluten-free, dairy-free nutrition program, he decided that he needed to experience the program himself. But he also decided to give up all animal products as well. In 18 months, he returned to active mountain bike and road racing, lost nearly 45 pounds, and had a 25% drop in his cholesterol. Arshad is a man of many hats. He is the creator of AmritaTM, a plant-based nutrition company, focusing on endurance and recovery bars for active people. Arshad is also a marketing and strategy leader at a Fortune 100 company. And because of his work on helping his son recover from autism, he has also served on the board of directors for local New York-based autism nonprofit organization.
Above all, he loves being a husband and father to three active and healthy children. Arshad lives right outside New York City with his wife and their 3 young kids.
Arshad and Amrita Health Foods are very pleased to be a patron for ride4NY.org
Miya Shoji - New York City http://www.miyashoji.com Miya Shoji is a high-end furniture store that follows a very straightforward aesthetic philosophy: the works of nature and aging are more beautiful than the complex designs of man. This philosophy results in shoji screens, tables and futon mattress frames that appear as organic as tree trunks – and chests of drawers with the look of deep-forest artifacts. The store’s range of custom-made furniture is at once striking and humble, powerful and subtle.
Miya Shoji uses wood from Japan, the northeastern U.S., and elsewhere. The best wood comes from the center of the forest and is cut the same way that the wood grows. The harvested wood is allowed to dry and “find its shape” for ten years before being turned into the unique furniture available from the store, and that aging adds to the furniture’s non-mass-produced look.
